KOSTRAD TROOPS LEAVE FOR SAPARUA TO

CONTROL SECTARIAN CLASHES

Ambon, Oct 26 (ANTARA) - A company of troops from the Army`s Strategic

Reserves Command (Kostrad)`s Battalion 407 left for

Saparua island, Central Maluku district, at dawn on Wednesday to help

overcome a renewed sectarian clash which erupted late on

Tuesday.

 

The Kostrad troops left for the island aboard a Navy warship, Chief of

Staff of Pattimura military district command, Col. Agus Suyitno

said on Wednesday.

 

"I received a report that the troops have arrived in the conflict-hit

area, and the security condition there has returned to normal," he

said.

 

The clash involving residents of Sirisori Islam, Ulath and Ouw villages

has reportedly injured at least 12 people. Five of the victims who

sustained serious injuries are receiving intensive medical treatment.

 

The conflict also led to the evacuation of hundreds of residents, most

of them old persons, women, and children to safer areas.
